Our Instructor

Heather McMahon

Heather is a qualified yoga teacher (AYTN 1998) with 20 years experience in teaching adults and children. Heather is a member of Yoga Australia and has current first aid and CPR qualifications along with a working with children check. She has completed further yoga training specifically around teaching children, Yoga Psychology and Trauma Sensitive Yoga.

Heather currently teaches Trauma Sensitive Yoga classes in Caulfield South and weekly classes in St Kilda for clients of Sacred Heart Mission. All classes from children’s to adults are trauma informed. This means offering every student individual choice around the postures and breathing, and includes a no-touch policy and language that is non prescriptive and inclusive.

In addition to conducting her own Yoga Essence classes, Heather provides custom and corporate classes and has taught Yoga as an elective in a number of leading Melbourne secondary schools.

Years of teaching preschool and school age children, from kinder through to year 12 has given her an understanding of the unique needs of children and helped to develop classes that are engaging and adapted to each age group.

Younger children’s classes centre around play through storytelling, games, craft, and music. Fundamental to this yoga-based play is an emphasis on developing  skills needed to help regulate emotions, deal with anxiety, and promote continued social and emotional learning.

Adolescents experience an adult yoga class with a tailored relaxation designed to build inner strength and confidence.

Underpinning all classes is an emphasis on building self esteem, positive self talk and respect for self and others.
Corporate classes can be tailored according to requirements, and time available.  We know it’s not easy squeezing in a yoga class in your lunch break!
